QINGDAO, 30 March – Four students from Qingdao University of Science and Technology bravely rescued a drowning girl on Old Man Beach, earning praise for their quick thinking and teamwork.

Guo Mingchuan, Wang Shiyong, Sun Shaohui, and Guo Zhixing, students from Leisure Sports Class 241 at the College of Physical Education, were playing near the reef area after the tide had receded when they saw a girl who had collapsed in the water.

"I was walking in front with a flashlight when I saw a woman standing about 10 meters away. Suddenly, she fell into the water. I knew something was wrong," said Guo Mingchuan. He immediately called out to Wang Shiyong, and together they rushed into the cold water to pull the woman out.

After calling the police, the students noticed that the girl had lost body temperature. She was visibly shaking and her skin had turned purple. Despite the near-freezing conditions, the four students removed their coats to keep her warm, took off her wet shoes and socks, and gathered dead leaves to build a small fire.

While waiting for emergency services, the students divided their tasks: Guo Mingchuan ran to the roadside to guide the rescue team, Guo Zhixing and Sun Shaohui searched for fuel for the fire, and Wang Shiyong stayed by the girl's side, rubbing her hands and feet and talking to her to keep her conscious.

"She was crying and trembling. I just kept telling her, ‘You’re going to be okay. Don’t be afraid. Help is coming,’” said Wang.

When emergency personnel arrived, the students assisted her into the ambulance and explained the situation. They then returned to campus by taxi — cold, wet, and barefoot — yet none of them complained. “None of us felt cold, our blood was boiling,” said Guo Mingchuan.

Back at the dormitory, the four said nothing about their heroic act. “It was unforgettable for us, but also something anyone else would have done,” said Guo Mingchuan.

On April 6, the Political and Legal Committee of Laoshan District awarded each of the four students the title of “Outstanding Individual” along with a reward of $3,000.
